The name “Followers of Abraham” was chosen to highlight the Islamic belief that all prophets, including the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), shared the same mission that the prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) had; which was to teach people to believe in One God and to worship God.
Abraham is one of the greatest prophets ever sent by God. His story is celebrated by the three major religions of the world and provides a common heritage for all their followers. The followers of Abraham are those who try to walk in the footsteps of this great prophet, and who seek to worship God with a pure creed.
“Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. Rather, he had a pure creed, was a submitter, and did not join other gods with The One God.” Qur’an. Chapter 3 : Verse 67
The word ‘submitter’ in the above mentioned verse is actually the Arabic word ‘muslim’. The Arabic word ‘muslim’ literally means ‘one who submits’ or simply means ‘submitter’. In this context it means one who submits to the will of God and worships God alone. The Qur’an regards the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) as a Muslim because he satisfies the Arabic meaning of the word. With this understanding of Arabic, the Qur’an teaches indeed that all prophets were ‘Muslim’ because they all submitted to God.
“God has chosen you and has not placed any hardship on you in the religion, which is the same creed of your forefather Abraham. It is God who has named you muslims (i.e. submitters) now as well as in the past.” Qur’an. Chapter 22 : Verse 78
